Descriptive Answer Type (Marks 5)
1. Give the substance of the poem ‘Meeting at Night’?
Ans: Robert Browning is one of the greatest love poets
in English poetry. Browning’s love poetry is realistic in character. A man
loves a woman for her physical charm and passion. ‘Meeting at Night’ deals with
the midnight mission of a lover. The lover sails on the sea to meet his
beloved. The sea is grey and the land is black. A yellow half-moon is visible
in the sky. The waves are very active and playful. The lover lands on the beach
and walks a mile of the beach. He crosses three fields to reach a farmhouse
where his lady-love lives. He taps at the pane to attract her attention. She
lights a match to respond. The two lovers meet under the cover of darkness of
the night. The lover cannot hear the voice of his beloved because of the loud
beating of his and his beloved’s hearts. The midnight mission of the lover
comes to an end as he meets his lover at night. The beloved is also happy to
get her lover before her.
