1. Comment on the appropriateness of the title ‘The Proposal’.
Ans: ‘The Proposal’ is a one-act play written by Anton Chekhov. The title of the play is a very apt one because the whole play is about Lomov proposing Natalya. All the characters of the play are some way influenced by the marriage proposal. Right from the beginning to the end, the story revolves around marriage proposal. Lomov visits Chubukov’s house to propose to his daughter Natalya. But before he proposes to her they start fighting over Oxen Meadows. As a result, Lomov becomes sick and leaves. Chubukov informs Natalya that Lomov had come to propose her for marriage. She starts lamenting over the loss as she herself wants to get married. Lomov is called back again by Chubukov and once again they start arguing over dogs. However, the proposal is successfully done in some other way at the end of the play. Hence, we can say that the title ‘The Proposal’ is meaningful and most significant for the play.
2. Sketch the character of Lomov.
Ans: Ivan Vassilevitch Lomov is the most important character of Anton Chekhov’s one-act play ‘The Proposal’. He is a unmarried man in his mid-thirties. As he has reached a critical age, he wants to get married as soon as possible. He also suffers from palpitations and spend sleepless nights. He can’t bear excitement. He is a land owner. He wants to maintain his social status. So he decides to propose to his neighbour’s daughter for marriage. Lomov is egoistic also. He goes to propose to Natalya but starts arguing with her over little issues like Oxen Meadows and pet dogs. He loses his temper very easily and abuses Natalya and her father Chubukov. He is good or bad but finally marries Natalya. (More Questions.....)
